McRaes Global provided an end-to-end solution to rising maintenance costs from long obsolete components, and an original design that was no longer fit for purpose with leaks, cracks and other failures occurring regularly.
The system is part of a plant constructed in the eighties, with an old control system and ageing components with frequent leaks and cracks developing in some areas of the pipework. The main pumps were long obsolete Towler models, using old servo motor displacement controls which we were unable to support when faults arose, or repair in the event of a failure – putting the plant at risk. The system operated four high value Hagglund drives which were at risk of consequential failure should an issue arise.
We proposed a solution which saw the deployment of modern Danfoss H1 pumps with electronic displacement control via HMI panels in both the plant and operator control stations, Pall Athalon filters were installed to maintain high levels of fluid cleanliness. We also fitted crossline reliefs, and flushing facilities to each motor, The challenge was to remove the original system and install new components in a ten-day turnaround, with pre-works completed in the months prior wherever possible.
Key outcomes:
Significantly reduced connection points due to rationalising the original pipework and valves into combined manifolds.
Updating to locally supportable components.
Provide basic system diagnostics, and key alarms direct to the operator in real-time.
No major change to the plant control system, everything is achieved through intercepting existing signals.
